Early Dimes
1805 10C 4 Berries, JR-2, R.2, MS63 PCGS Secure. A substantial mintage of 120,780 Draped Bust dimes was accomplished in 1805, with two die varieties known for the date. The two varieties employed the same obverse die, but they are easily differentiated by the number of berries in the olive branch on the reverse. The present coin represents the JR-2 variety, with four berries in the branch. The JR-2 reverse also has narrow A's in the legend and shares some other characteristics with earlier reverse dies. It is possible that the reverse was engraved at an earlier date, perhaps as early as 1798. The JR-2 is the more available variety, making it a favorite choice of type collectors.
The coin offered here is an attractive Select specimen, with sharply detailed central design elements and just a touch of flatness on some stars. Both sides show clash marks, those on the reverse are especially dramatic. Some faint planchet adjustment marks are evident on the bust but signs of contact are minimal. The mostly brilliant surfaces show a few subtle hints of greenish-gold toning and eye appeal is outstanding. Population: 2 in 63, 4 finer (7/17).
