Early Half Dollars
1794 50C O-107, T-5, R.6, Fine 12 NGC. Tompkins Die State 1/2. Two thin, old linear depressions run between star 12 and the underside of Liberty's chin -- possibly remnants of a strike-through, or marks of a similar nature. Other light abrasions from circulation are long since minimized by smooth, even wear. Iridescent colors combine for a golden glow beneath brownish-gray and blue patina. Sharp definition for the grade exists on both sides. The Condition Census for O-107 -- an R.6 variety -- for many years topped out at VF25, until an XF45 example appeared as lot 4041 of our April, 2017 Central States Signature auction.
