Seated Half Dollars
1853 50C Arrows and Rays, WB-101, MS65 PCGS. This Gem 1853 Arrows and Rays half is one of the defining condition rarities of the Seated half series. More than 3.5 million pieces were struck, yet the coin's scarcity in Gem or finer grades -- combined with its demand as a single-year type -- far exceed its easy availability in lesser grades.
The present coin is needle-sharp despite clashed dies. Frost-white surfaces gleam with Mint-fresh cartwheel luster. Glimpses of powdery, gray-gold patina are thinly distributed across virtually undisturbed surfaces. There are simply no marks to report. An interesting die crack curves from the edge below Liberty's foot, through the rock support, across the lower shield and across the hand. Eye appeal is extraordinary. Population: 15 in 65 (1 in 65+), 12 finer (7/17).
