Gobrecht Dollars
1836 $1 Judd-60 Original, Medal Alignment, Pollock-65, R.1, PR61 PCGS. Silver. Plain Edge. No Stars Obverse, Stars Reverse. Die Alignment IV (head of Liberty opposite the O in OF after a medal turn). Die State F. Die Alignment IV shows the eagle flying level in the starry field after a medal turn. The die scratch though the O in DOLLAR and scratch below the D in DOLLAR are very faint on this example. The Mint's account books show these pieces were struck in the final week of 1836. Unlike many Gobrecht dollars, this example displays watery fields that really do make a proof designation make sense. (Many 1836s are Prooflike at best.) Each side is mostly brilliant with a thin ring of golden and blue patina around the outermost reach of the rims. Well, but not completely defined. Minimal marks. This is really a splendid Gobrecht dollar that would serve well as a type coin.
