Three Dollar Gold Pieces
1854-O $3 AU58 PCGS. Variety 2. The 1854-O was the New Orleans Mint's only venture into the mintage of three dollar gold pieces, making the issue essential for a complete O-Mint gold type set. Just 24,000 pieces were struck, most of which circulated. Uncirculated pieces are very scarce as a result. A number of borderline Uncirculated pieces exist, and over the years a few of these have migrated into Mint State holders.
This near-Mint example shows just a touch of wear. The fields are partially prooflike and the the bow is incomplete, suggesting the dies were lapped. An interesting die flaw exists adjacent to U in UNITED -- an unusual strike-through -- which exists not only on the present coin, but others in our archive. A survey of 72 pieces reveals that 12.5% of the sample have the same anomaly (one in eight coins on average). Interestingly, all of these examples show lapped dies and die cracks through a weak mintmark. Still, this piece is attractive with only a bit of light chatter and lustrous, sun-gold surfaces. Population: 28 in 58 (1 in 58+), 2 finer (7/17).
