Early Half Eagles
1802/1 $5 BD-8, R.4, MS61 NGC. Bass-Dannreuther Die State c/c, the rare terminal die state that shows a heavy rim cud above the T in UNITED. Die cracks from an earlier state run through the UNI and ED. On the obverse, thin die cracks connect stars 3 and 5 to the dentils. Both dies are clashed. BD-8 is a plentiful High Overdate variety, although this is only within the context of 1802 half eagles; merely 150 to 200 pieces are known in all grades, and few are from the terminal die state. This low-end Mint State example has light field chatter that limits the grade but no singular abrasions that distract. The obverse is satiny in the fields, while the reverse shows semiprooflike characteristics. Both sides are yellow-gold with coppery-orange overtones that attest to the originality of the patina. A sharp strike spans the border stars, dentils, and central devices.
