Early Half Eagles
1813 $5 BD-2, R.4, MS61 PCGS. Bass-Dannreuther Die State d/b, showing light cracks on both sides. BD-2 is the scarcer of the two 1813 half eagle varieties, with fewer than 200 pieces believed known. Uncirculated examples of the variety -- and of the date in general -- are in demand as type coins, as the 1813 is the only readily available date in the Capped Small Bust, Large Size type. This example is better-struck than many of its peers, showing above-average definition of the eagle's left (facing) wing feathers. The strike is even and boldly rendered, and the satiny, lustrous surfaces display pleasing yellow-gold coloration. Light handling marks on the cheek and in the field limit the grade in the absence of any singular abrasions.
