Liberty Half Eagles
1842-C $5 Small Date VF30 PCGS. CAC. Variety 1. This coin is extensively worn but basically problem-free and certainly attractive for the grade; attractive enough, in fact, to gain approval from CAC. The wear is compounded by the fact that the strike is quite soft at the borders, especially on the obverse. On both sides, the deep golden centers are contrasted by splashes of reddish-gold towards the rims. There are many marks visible but none is especially deep or detracting. This is a very pleasing example of the rarest collectable Charlotte gold coin and a great option for the ambitious date collector of Charlotte half eagles who doesn't have the big budget required to purchase a high-grade 1842-C Small Date.
This is the rarest half eagle from this mint with an estimated 60-80 pieces known in all grades. While typically seen in lower grades, there are not many clean, problem-free examples in VF. Population: 7 in 30, 36 finer. CAC: 2 in 30, 10 finer (7/17).
