Liberty Half Eagles
1854 $5 MS64+ PCGS. CAC. The 1854 is among the more plentiful No Motto Liberty half eagles in high grade, although its availability is relative; no half eagle from this period is common in Mint State, and the 1854 is rarely seen above MS62. The Condition Census is composed of a handful of MS64 coins, of which the present piece is the only one awarded a Plus designation. Sharp and frosty, this yellow-gold finest-known shows no obvious abrasions. A loupe reveals, at certain angles, faint lines in the obverse fields that prevent a Gem designation, but the eye appeal is outstanding. The CAC green label endorses the exceptional quality.
We have previously handled an MS64 coin on only 11 occasions, including duplicate appearances by some coins. The last was in lot 6210 of our April 2015 Central States Signature sale, where an NGC coin realized $15,275. We have not offered a PCGS-graded near-Gem in nearly a decade, and we anticipate record demand for this finest-known 1854 half eagle when it crosses the auction block. Population: 5 in 64 (1 in 64+), 0 finer. CAC: 3 in 64, 0 finer (7/17).
