Proof Liberty Half Eagles
1902 $5 PR62 Cameo NGC. Mint records indicate that 162 proof half eagles were struck in 1902, and today fewer than 100 pieces are believed to survive. The vast majority lack an significant cameo contrast, as the proof die preparation process was altered in this year to polish the devices to a gleaming mirror just like the fields. Of the 69 pieces reported by NGC and PCGS combined, only 18 are Cameos, and none are Ultra/Deep Cameos. This is a well-contrasted example, and some scattered hairlines in the obverse fields place it in an affordable grade level. The strike is full. Deep reflectivity makes the fields glimmer with the slightest rotation beneath a light. Census: 1 in 62 Cameo, 9 finer (7/17).
