Indian Half Eagles
1909-O $5 AU58 NGC. Half eagle coinage at the New Orleans Mint was minimal after the reopening of the facility in 1879. The denomination was coined only 1892, '93, and '94, and then once more in 1909. The mintage in 1909 was cut short by the closure of the mint in April, with the final production being 34,200 coins. The 1909-O half eagle is important both as the final gold issue from the New Orleans Mint but also as the only O-mint issue featuring Bela Lyon Pratt's Indian Head design. It is also a major key date within the Indian half eagle series and the rarest in high grade.
This near-Mint representative displays satiny straw-gold surfaces with luster remaining in the recesses. Light friction in the fields suggests brief circulation, although the design is as sharp as it was when struck. Scattered light field marks accompany the grade. The mintmark is clear under a loupe.
