Liberty Eagles
1866-S $10 No Motto AU53 NGC. A notation in the Report of the Director of the Mint, for the fiscal year ended June 30, 1866, stated:

"The motto, 'In God we trust,' authorized by the act of Congress of March 3, 1865, has been placed upon all the gold and silver coins of the United States susceptible of such addition since the commencement of the current year."

Gold eagles at Philadelphia in 1866 were struck only with the new Motto dies, although the San Francisco Mint produced 8,500 No Motto coins early in the year before new dies arrived. The 1866-S No Motto eagle is rare in all grades and almost unknown in Mint State. This About Uncirculated example displays sharp detail and partially lustrous yellow-gold surfaces with smooth fields. A mere handful of coins are known in this grade, and only a handful are known finer. Census: 4 in 53, 9 finer (7/17).
