Liberty Eagles
1878-CC $10 AU50 NGC. Variety 1-A. Variety 1-A, the only known variety. Genuine examples exhibit tiny die lumps below the E in TEN and a short, horizontal die line on the lower neck of Liberty. Only 3,244 Liberty eagles were struck at the Carson City Mint in 1878 and the majority of the mintage was released into circulation in the regional economy. Few examples were preserved by contemporary collectors, making the 1878-CC a rare issue in high grade. The surviving population is estimated at 60-75 examples in all grades today. This attractive AU specimen offers pleasing orange-gold surfaces that retain just a few traces of original mint luster. The highpoint details are somewhat bluntly struck and there are no obvious or detracting marks on either side. Census: 6 in 50, 16 finer (7/17).
Ex: San Francisco Signature (Heritage, 7/2005), lot 10380.
