Liberty Double Eagles
1860 $20 MS61 PCGS. In his webbook on the No Motto double eagle series, Doug Winter writes this about the 1860: "With the exception of the 1865, no Type One date had its higher grade availability altered more by the S.S. Republic treasure than the 1860. Some of the best individual double eagles from this wreck were dated 1860 ... ." The origin of this Uncirculated twenty dollar gold piece is unknown. It displays frosty, textured surfaces with a decided green-gold hue. The neck feathers are notably strong, while the stars and curls exhibit a hint of softness. Each side is readily appealing despite scattered, grade-consistent abrasions.
