Liberty Double Eagles
1873-S $20 Closed 3 MS62 PCGS. Most double eagles produced at the San Francisco Mint in 1873 are of this variety. The facility was late to receive new Open 3 dies, created to better distinguish the 3 from an 8. This variant is scarce in Mint State, very scarce in MS62, and extremely rare in MS63 or higher. Coruscating luster and peach-gold color give each side far better allure than the grade implies. Complete star radials and crisp feathers are an added bonus, shifting attention away from peppered abrasions.
