Liberty Double Eagles
1892-CC $20 MS61 PCGS. Variety 1-A. The sole dies, used to strike 27,265 double eagles in 1892. The situation facing the Carson City Mint during its final years of operation were as follows: declining Comstock Lode yields in the face of increased export demand. That meant that while the CC-mint was taking in less and less bullion to coin every year, the Treasury still required the facility to produce as much as it could to ship overseas. Exportation also explains the relative availability of the 1892-CC and its contemporaries in high grades. With that in mind, truly Mint State examples are elusive. This frosty, well-struck twenty dollar gold piece offers rich reddish-gold color with greenish accents. Myriad bagmarks are noted.
