1794 1C Head of 1794, S-40, B-28, High R.5 -- Damage -- PCGS Genuine. XF Details. Our EAC grade: sharpness of VF20, net VG8. Delightful light olive-brown color with darker mahogany, from old corrosion that was carefully removed. The surfaces have numerous tiny digs and scrapes, but most are of little consequence. This is a late die state with both reverse cracks developed, but without the obverse crack of the terminal die state. In terms of importance, it ranks high on the list of 1794s, with only about 30 to 35 coins known. Graded Good 6 and 21st finest in the extended Del Bland Condition Census, but we feel that VG8 or even VG10 is a more appropriate EAC grade that would place this piece in the top 15 examples known.
Ex: Colonial Coin Co. (6/8/1972); Jules Reiver (Heritage, 1/2006), lot 19201; Rod Burress; Terry S. Denman (5/14/2012).
From The Padula Family Foundation Collection.
