1797 1C Reverse of 1797, Stems, S-137, B-8, R.2 -- Environmental Damage -- PCGS Genuine. XF Details. Our EAC grade: sharpness of VF35, net VF30. Breen Die State II with no cracks and only the slightest bulge at ICA. While bluntly struck, this piece has outstanding tan and steel-brown surfaces with myriad planchet marks that were not struck out, but with few post-strike imperfections. The "environmental damage" is nothing more than maroon patina. Conservatively graded VF20 by Bill Noyes in the 1989 EAC catalog and called VF30 in the Halpern catalog. Del Bland grades this piece VF35 and tied for ninth finest, while Noyes omitted this piece from his 2005 "Official" Condition Census.
Ex: C. Douglas Smith; Herman Halpern (Stack's 3/1988), lot 138; Don Valenziano, Jr.; EAC Sale (4/1989), lot 82; Fred Lochary; Thomas D. Reynolds (4/2010).
