Large Cents
1800/79 1C Style Two Hair, NC-2, B-11, High R.6, Good 6 PCGS. Our EAC grade: sharpness of VG8, net Good 6. The obverse has a thin but prominent rim break from 3 o'clock to 5 o'clock. Only two die states are recorded, with and without this slender cud. The Noyes Plate Coin (obverse only) in his 1991 reference, illustrating the late die state. Bill Noyes grades this piece Good 6 and tied for fourth finest known, while Del Bland grades the piece Good 5 and tied for seventh finest. The rarity of this variety was incorrectly listed in the Breen Large Cent Encyclopedia, and should have been recorded as High Rarity 6. At the time, just 13 examples were recorded. Two more have been discovered since. Of the 15, only one is better than VG. Like so many other rarities, many more collectors are searching for these coins than ever before. In 1958, when Penny Whimsy was published, only four examples were known. With just one example discovered every four years since 1958, the odds are slim that any individual collector will be so fortunate. A better choice would be to bid on this coin as it crosses the auction block.
Ex: Donald H. Boller (2/1984); Del Bland (2/18/1984); Jules Reiver (Heritage, 1/2006), lot 19453; Chris Victor-McCawley (4/2009).
