Large Cents
1801 1C S-217, B-7, High R.6, VF35 PCGS. Our EAC grade: sharpness of VF30, net VF20. Breen Die State III, with clash marks and die bulges. This important cent is one of the stars of the Padula collection and ranks well in the Condition Census for the variety. We fully agree with both Bill Noyes and Del Bland regarding the sharpness and net grades for this example. Bland ranks this piece as tied for fourth finest, and Noyes has it listed in the fifth spot among the finest pieces in his roster. Both sides exhibit scattered marks, but the olive-brown surfaces are smooth and slightly glossy. A lovely example for the advanced collector.
Purchased unattributed at the Long Beach Convention in June 1982 by Stephen Fischer; Del Bland (6/4/1982); G. Lee Kuntz (Superior, 10/1991), lot 239; later, Chris Victor McCawley (5/2010).
From The Padula Family Foundation Collection.
