1801 1C NC-4, B-14, R.7 -- Surfaces Smoothed -- PCGS Genuine. VF Details. Our EAC grade: sharpness of VF20, net VG7. In the Dupont catalog, written by Dr. Sheldon, this was described as a "possible new variety," although Sheldon described it in other terms: "Until another example of this apparent obverse shows up, in unaltered condition, we will have to regard the coin as probably a clever imposition like dozens of other similar examples coming almost constantly to numismatic attention." The second example was found by Walter Breen nine years later, and six more have been located since, for a total of eight known examples today. This coin is either tied for finest known or is second finest, depending on who does the observation. Although cleaned and recolored, and also noticeably burnished with a corresponding diminished detail, this is a pleasing example with gold, olive, and iridescent toning. Plated in the Breen book.
