Large Cents
1803 1C Large Date, Small Fraction, S-264, B-24, High R.4 -- Damage -- Genuine PCGS. VF Details. Our EAC grade: sharpness of Fine 15, net Good 6. Breen Die State III, the latest recorded for the variety, with a retained cud that obliterates STA on the reverse. At one time this variety was considered a major rarity, and it is still highly popular with a wide range of collectors for its individual listing in the Guide Book. Such pieces, like the Starred Reverse cent, the 1795 Reeded Edge cent, and many others, enjoy great demand from collectors who seek one example of each variety recorded in that reference, now in its 71st edition. This example displays pleasing chestnut-brown surfaces with marks evident on Liberty's face and at the lower reverse. Other minor marks are noted on each side. We agree with Bob Grellman's comments from a decade ago: "A cent that's difficult to grade given the number of marks. The net grade assigned may be a bit low, and the eye appeal probably is better than you might expect from the description."
