Territorial Gold
1849 $5 Moffat & Co. Five Dollar VF20 PCGS. K-4a, R.4. Bavarian goldsmith Albrecht Kuner modeled the Moffat & Co. five dollar gold coins after the federal half eagles of the period, with LIBERTY replaced by MOFFAT & Co. on the coronet and S.M.V. (Standard Mint Value) CALIFORNIA GOLD in place of UNITED STATES OF AMERICA. These coins were an integral circulating medium in the Gold Rush-era West, as evidenced by this well-worn reddish-gold offering. Outlines are bold, but the finer details are mostly indistinct. Listed on page 395 of the 2018 Guide Book.
