Arras (Beaurains) Treasure, deposited c. AD314/5

The famed Beaurains-lez-Arras Treasure was accidentally discovered by two Belgian workmen whilst digging in a brickfield on 21 September 1922. Unfortunately before a comprehensive assessment of its contents could be made, and with the additional threats from a Ghent antiquities dealer of imprisonment for the pair on suspicion of counterfeiting, much was sold or even consigned to the melting furnaces in the immediate aftermath of the find. However, with the benefit of around 80 coins appearing in the Ratto sale catalogue of April 1923, and the efforts of other private individuals at the time, many larger pieces from the trove were subsequently acquired by institutions. For instance. the gold necklaces, bracelets and cameos found in association with the coins, as well as a silver candelabra came into the care of the British Museum, and are currently on gallery display in Room 70, whilst other highly significant gold medallions commemorating events such as the recapture of the province of Britannia by Constantius Chlorus in AD 296 are housed in Arras Museum. Indeed such was the subsequent interest in this discovery that Spink and Son began marketing electrotypes of the larger medallions, the work of Paris dealer and collector, Etienne Bougey in January 1928 (Numismatic Circular, Vol. XXXVI, pp57-58).
Estimate: £6,000.00 - £8,000.00
