National Bank of Egypt, several obverse and reverse archival photographs showing designs for a £5, 2 November 1910, all black and white, bank building at centre, with figures in the street, value at left and low left and right, reverse with domed building and palm trees at centre(Pick unlisted), These designs are interesting and confusing for a number of reasons. First and foremost, the design is dated 1910, but a note with a virtually identical design was issued in 1924. it is unclear whether this design was created as early as 1910 and then only used 14 years later, or whether the designer put the incorrect date on the mock-up. it is interesting to note that in the final design of 1924, the Arabic man in the foreground was changed to a policeman, presumably guarding the bank building. Other differences from the issued note include the straight text at the top (this was curved), the large 5 in the low left and right (these were shrunk significantly) and the later addition of two pharaonic heads at the top left and right. Even these four designs are not identical. There are several differences in the underprint and placement of text elements (5).

Estimate: £1,200.00 - £1,600.00
