Hadrian. Denarius; Hadrian; 117-138 AD, Rome, c. 132 AD, Denarius, 3.16g. BM-862, C-991 (5 Fr.), RIC-310. Obv: HADRIANVS - AVG COS III PP Head laureate r. Rx: NILVS Nilus reclining r. holding reed and cornucopia turned away from him, below his r. elbow a small human figure, hippopotamus before him, crocodile in waves below. This type, part of Hadrian's travel series, commemorates his visit to Egypt in 130 AD, during which his companion Antinous drowned in the Nile. The human figure below Nilus' elbow is familiar from sestertii, but rarely occurs on denarii; no denarii with such a figure were known to C. Clay, Num. Chron. 1970, p. 80, note 6.. VF
