Rev. PRINCIPI IVVENTVTIS / S - C Herennius Etruscus, as prince of the youth, standing facing in military attire, head turned left, holding wand in his right hand and transverse spear in his left. Cohen 28 var. and RIC 171a var. (both with differing bust type). Rare. An excellent example with a very attractive portrait and an extensive pedigree. Repatinated and somewhat smoothed, otherwise, good very fine.

From the collection of Yves Gunzenreiner, ex NAC Q, 6 April 2006, 2029, ex Elsen 65, 17-18 March 2001, 149 and Numismatic Fine Arts XVI, 2 December 1985, 514, from the collections of V. M. Brand, Part 3, Sotheby's, 9 June 1983, 432 and Herzfelder, Egger 43 ('Sammlung eines bekannten Wiener Amateurs'), 14 April 1913, 1778 ('Vortreffliches Portät, Medaillonstil. Schöne Patina, Prachtexemplar'), ex J. Hirsch XI, 4 May 1904, 1096.

The quality of the die engraving and the carefully produced and exceptionally broad flan make this Sestertius stand out strikingly from the otherwise mostly mediocre Herennius Etruscus aes coinage. There is a remarkably medallic aspect to it, which undoubtedly also attracted its previous owners!
