GREEK COINS
Islands off Ionia. Samos. Circa 600-570 BC. Stater (Electrum, 23 mm, 17.27 g), Euboio-Samian standard. Irregular and uncertain design, probably random. Rev. Two oblong incuse punches with irregular markings. Barron pl. 30, 1. Robinson 8. Weidauer 195. Very rare, with less than ten examples known, most in museums. Good very fine.
Ex Gemini XI, 12 January 2014, 175.
The really annoying thing about this coin, and the others of the type that exist, is that if you look at it long enough, you begin seeing things on its obverse, which very definitely are not there! What we have, specifically with the two oblong punches on the reverse, is a coin that still is very much like one of the ingots of pre-coinage times.
