Kings of Macedon. Alexander III 'the Great', 336-323 BC. Stater (Gold, 18 mm, 8.60 g, 1 h), struck during the rule of Philip III Arrhidaios, Sardes, c. 323-319. Head of Athena to right, wearing Corinthian helmet adorned with serpent. Rev. ΑΛΕΞΑΝΔΡΟΥ Nike standing left, holding wreath in her right hand and stylis in her left; to left, monogram of ΠΥ over race torch. Price 2588. Thompson, Sardes, 146a. Clear and nicely centered. Extremely fine.
