Cilicia, Anazarbus. Maximus. Caesar, A.D. 235-238. Æ hexassarion (66 mm, 16.98 g, 6 h). Bare-headed and cuirassed bust of Maximus right, slight drapery on far shoulder / Tyche seated left within tetrastyle temple; below, river god Pyramos swimming left. Ziegler 673.1 (Vs4/Rs13; this coin); SNG BN 2104 (same obv. die); Price & Trell 339. Extremely rare - one of just four recorded specimens and the one selected by Ziegler to illustrate the type, thus probably the finest known. Brown and green patina. A choice example of fine style. Good very fine.

At the time Ziegler published his corpus of the provincial coinage of Anazarbus in 1993, there were only four examples of this coin known, struck from three different reverse dies. Levante did not have an example in his large collection of the mint, nor is it included in the sylloge of the Tahberer collection that was published recently. No examples appear in any of the major on-line databases of recent sales, either, suggesting the population since 1993 has not changed.

Ziegler notes that the photo used for the publication of his book came from the British Museum, but that ""the whereabouts of the coin is unknown."" We now know where it is.
