Currency Commission, Irish Free State, specimen £50, 13.5.06 (1928), small red serial number Y/01 000000, violet, pale green and pale yellow, Lady Lavery at left in oval frame, value at centre and at each corner, signatures of Brennan and McElligott, reverse violet and pale green, River Shannon mask at centre, value low centre(PMI LTN6s), perforated and red SPECIMEN overprint. Manuscript signatures of John Lavery and Hazel Lavery in right field. The notes comes with a letter written by Frank Field stating that this is the note personally presented to him by Winston Churchill whilst Chancellor of the Exchequer in 1929. W. (Bill) Field was personal valet to Winston Churchill at the time. The lot also includes a newspaper cutting featuring 'Bill the Butler' and a photograph of Winston Churchill. The note about uncirculated, fresh and original and the very rare 'Irish Free State' type. The manuscript signatures most interesting as John Lavery was the artist whose portrait of his wife ,Hazel, was used on the Currency Commission series of currency notes. A lovely group.
