Fulaytid Sharifs of Makka, Mukaththir b. 'Isa al-Fulayta (584-593h), dirham, Makka, undated, obv., in margin: duriba hadha al-dirham bi-Makka; in field: al-amir | Mukaththir, rev., in margin: la ilaha illa Allah Muhammad rasul Allah; in field: al-imam | Ahmad, 1.17g (cf Album 1159M RRR), very fine and of the highest rarity, apparently unpublished. The type listed by Album, citing a single example on Zeno, lacked mint, date, and even denomination. On the present coin, however, the mint-name Makka is particularly clear, and the obverse legend confirms that these small coins were indeed called dirhams as Album suggests. The Fulaytid Sharifs controlled Makka during the latter part of the sixth century, until Mukaththir's son Muhammad was defeated and killed by Qatada b. Idris circa 600h. Qatada's descendants were to continue as Sharifs of Makka thereafter until AD1916/1335h.
