English copperplate engraving entitled "The Battel Between the Spaniards and the pyrats or Buccaniers before the citty of Panama," published by Alexandre Olivier Exquemelin, 1699 (London). 6-1/2" x 11" This engraving depicts the Battle of Panama City where, in 1671, privateers led by Henry Morgan attacked the Spanish-held city. Although the pirates captured the city, the Spanish troops set fire to it before retreating. Originally published in Exquemelin's History of the Bucaniers of America printed in Dutch in 1678, this engraving comes from the 1699 English version. The engraving shows some fold lines (as issued) with a tiny separation along the top that has been archivally repaired, overall excellent paper quality and color, dealer notation on reverse.
