Bahri Mamluks, Al-Zahir Rukn al-Din Baybars I (658-676 AH /1260-1277 AD) AV Heavy Dinar. Al-Qahira mint, 661 AH = 1262 AD. Citing the Caliph al-Hakim. Name and title of Baybars; below, heraldic lion passant left / bismillah, al-Imam al-Hakim bi amr Allah abu'l-'Abbas Ahmad, Amir al-Mu'minin, across field in four lines; Kalima, mint and date in margin. Cf Album 880. 7.20g, 23mm, 3h.
Extremely Fine, heavy weight. Apparently unrecorded.
It was stated by Balog that Al-Zahir Rukn al-Din Baybars I was never recognised on the coinage of Cairo, only on that struck in Syria. This previously unrecorded Dinar disproves Balog's statement and confirms Baybars' recognition in Egypt in the year 661h.
Apparently Unrecorded Cairo Dinar
