Islands off Karia, Kos AR Tetradrachm. Circa 366-300 BC. Bearded head of Herakles left, wearing lion skin headdress / Crab over club to right; KΩION above, magistrate ΔIΩN below. HGC 6, 1302; cf. BMC 13-14, Pl. XXX 8 (same rev. die); cf. Hurter, Pixodarus Pl. 32, 24-5. 11.33g, 22mm, 2h.
Very Fine. Lightly toned.
Under complete Karian control by 355 BC, the proximity of Kos to Halikarnassos has led some to posit that the head of Herakles on the obverse of this issue is an homage to Maussolos, and indeed a likeness to the supposed head of the satrap in the British Museum is discernible
Bearing the Likeness of Maussolos?
