Large Cents
1801 1C NC-4, B-14, R.7 -- Environmental Damage -- NGC Details. VG. An impressive steel and olive-brown representative of this very rare Sheldon variety, with a surviving population of less than a dozen examples in all grades and conditions. The NC-4 combines the reverse of S-222 with an obverse die that was only used on this issue. The surfaces are moderately corroded, but the date and legends remain legible and the central devices are complete in outline. A slight rim bruise is visible near the E in UNITED. The NC-4 was first tentatively noticed in the Anderson Dupont Collection (Stack's, 2/1954), lot 344, but the variety was not officially confirmed until Walter Breen found another example nine years later. Our EAC grade Good 4.
