Shield Nickels
1880 5C AU55 ANACS. Repunched Date. The 1880 is the key to the Shield nickel series with only 16,000 circulation strikes produced. While a low mintage does not always equal rarity, in this case it does. The same dies were used for both proofs and business strikes, making it very difficult to discern a shallowly mirrored proof from a genuine strike for circulation. Almost all business strike pieces show some degree of remaining initial die polish, which yields semireflective fields. This example is bright overall with gray-brilliant surfaces. As expected, some die polish still remains in the fields, but not enough to cast doubt on the coin's status as a strike intended for circulation.
