Buffalo Nickels
1917-S 5C Two Feathers, FS-401 MS65 PCGS. The highest graded example certified by PCGS of this interesting variety, in which die lapping has removed the third feather usually seen behind the neck of the Indian. This is reminiscent of the more famous three-legged 1937-D Buffalo nickel, on which most of the fourth leg was similarly removed. The 1917-S is usually unimpressive in terms of strike and luster; while this piece has much to recommend it, it shares these general traits. Population (for variety): 1 in 65, 0 finer (9/17).
