Barber Quarters
1896-O 25C MS64 NGC. Of this issue, David Lawrence (1994) notes: "Very scarce in Fine and above." This should come as no surprise to students of the Barber quarter series, since the majority of the 1.4 million coins delivered by the New Orleans Mint this year entered circulation and remained there. This fortunate survivor is free of the abrasions often associated with the MS64 grade. The outward appearance is one of frosty-white brilliance, save for a faint grease streak (as struck) in the obverse field area just to the right of Liberty's mouth. Well struck for an O-mint issue and exceptionally appealing for the grade.
Ex: Superior 10/03; Richard J. Chouinard Collection of United States Coins, Part Two / Long Beach Signature (Heritage, 2/2005), lot 6604, where it realized $2,530.
