Colonials
1796 Medal Castorland Medal, Silver -- Graffiti -- PCGS Genuine. AU Details. W-9100, R.5. The Castorland jeton is a curious relic of a fleeting colony in Upstate New York. Conceived by French refugee Pierre Chassanis, who purchased 200,000 acres of farmland bounded by Lake Ontario and the Black River, these jetons were supposedly intended as keepsakes for colonists and trustees, though some researchers make a strong case for their being coins. Intentions aside, it appears some examples did see circulation, and the issue remains a popular entry in the colonial series. This lightly circulated olive and steel-gray example is boldly defined and well-centered. The right reverse field shows "#99" inscribed by hand.
