Large Cents
1797 1C Reverse of 1797, Stems, S-135, B-5, R.3, MS65 Brown PCGS Secure. Three early cent varieties, 1796 S-119, 1797 S-123, and 1797 S-135, known as the Nichols Find cents, are encountered from time-to-time in attractive Mint State preservation. The story of these coins is that Massachusetts Senator Benjamin Goodhue acquired the coins from the Mint (or from a local bank who received them from the Mint), and that they were handed down in the family through his daughters. According to information at Ancestry.com, all five of his daughters passed away many years before David Nichols distributed the coins circa 1863.
While the PCGS "Brown" designation is technically correct, this gorgeous Gem exhibits delicate blue patina on its reflective and glossy walnut surfaces that give way to coral and orange near the borders, representing faded mint color. A glass reveals a number of original planchet marks from before the coin was struck, but there is no evidence of any post-minting imperfections. A trivial, inactive spot is noted above the second T in STATES. The strike is well-centered with full obverse and reverse borders, and boldly defined devices. This lovely cent is remarkably well preserved for a 220 year old copper coin. Our EAC grade MS64. Population: 9 in 65 (1 in 65+) Brown, 2 finer (9/17).
