Proof Two Cent Pieces
1873 2C Closed 3 PR66 Red PCGS Secure. CAC. The 1873 two cent represents a curious proof-only issue. Most coins were struck contemporaneously, while others are supposed restrikes. The so-called "originals" feature a Closed 3 in the date. Their status as contemporary strikings can be traced to their inclusion in original 1873 proof sets. At least 600 Closed 3 two cent proofs were struck in 1873. Breen suggests an unknown quantity were probably melted after the denomination was abolished following the passage of the Coinage Act of 1873 on April 1. Uncertainties aside, survivors are definitely very rare at this grade level. A single proof is known finer.
Flashy pumpkin-gold surfaces are impeccably preserved without overt contact. A hint of reflectivity is apparent in the fields, and the central motifs show a thin layer of frost. A horizontal die scratch left of the 2 is diagnostic. Population: 15 in 66 Red, 1 finer. CAC: 3 in 66, 0 finer (9/17).
