Early Quarters
1804 25C B-2, R.5, VF20 PCGS. With a mintage of just 6,738 pieces, the 1804 quarter is, in theory, about equally as challenging as the 1796 issue, which shows a similar number of pieces struck. In reality, the 1804 is much scarcer as a date. Like the 1796, two varieties exist -- one with the final digit of the date high, the other with it low. The Browning-2 with a High 4 in the date is doubly scarce, both as a date and as a variety.
The average grade of any 1804 quarter seldom exceeds the VG level. This example, in contrast, is far finer than that, with sharply defined elements and natural, two-tone patina. Brownish-gray fields contrast with light-tan toning on the raised devices. We note a small planchet flaw at star 3 and a tiny void near star 4. Both defects are Mint-related and of minor significance. As usual, some blending of the field stars and clouds exist on the reverse. This is an excellent opportunity for the early quarter specialist, seldom offered and sharper than many of the Condition Census examples in the Rea-Koenings-Haroutunian reference.
