Early Quarters
1806 25C B-9, R.1, AU55 PCGS. Tompkins Die State 6/5, the latest die stage described in Steve Tompkins' reference. The lowest hair curls are lapped and nearly gone near 1 in the date. A bold die crack bisects the obverse between 12 and 7 o'clock, and both sides are prominently clashed. This is an original, Choice About Uncirculated coin with light golden-brown and grayish-blue toning. The eagle's shield is softly defined, and a few faint abrasions are noted at the central reverse and at TE in UNITED. The coin is housed in a previous generation green label holder, which obscures some diagnostic rim cuds and rim crumble that are the result of the legends being placed too close to the rim on Browning-9.
Ex: Central States Signature (Heritage, 4/2007), lot 417.
