Seated Quarters
1853/53 25C No Arrows, Briggs 1-A, FS-301, MS66 PCGS. A brief mintage of 44,200 1853 quarters was struck before word came down from the Mint to reduce the amount of silver in 1853 coinage as a means of bringing the silver-to-gold ratio back in balance. Arrows were added on either side of the date to signify the reduced weight, as well as some ill-conceived rays on the reverse. By then, most of the "heavyweight" silver coinage was melted, either by the Mint or by speculators.
Consequently, 1853 quarters at the old standard are scarce-to-rare and readily identified by faint, broad repunching of 53 in the date. This Premium Gem example displays a colorful patina of reddish-gold and bluish-gray and a crisp strike. Silver mint luster glows beneath the toning and emerges in patches on the reverse. Most of the high-grade Uncirculated pieces come from a small hoard of coins that avoided melting. Population: 6 in 66, 3 finer (9/17).
