Barber Quarters
1913-S 25C MS63 PCGS. The 1913-S is one of the three big keys of the Barber quarter series, along with the 1896-S and 1901-S. Of the three, the '13-S has by far the lowest mintage at only 40,000 pieces. Uncirculated survivors exist primarily by chance, as even the low-mintage dates in the Barber series failed to excite numismatists at the time of issue, and few high-end examples were set aside. The rather basal quality of artistic creativity in the design caused the Barber coins to become a workhorse of commercial transactions rather than a popular collectible. In the earliest part of the 20th century, coin collections were heavily weighted toward series with established rarity and challenge, interesting die varieties, or exceptional aesthetic appeal and intrigue -- none of which the Barber quarters could claim at the time. Only in recent decades have the Barber dimes, quarters, and halves received due recognition as worthy collectibles.
This 1913-S quarter dollar has well-struck design elements and mauve, pale-blue, and speckled dark olive toning. Lustrous surfaces are relatively well-preserved, revealing just a few minute contact marks on Liberty's face. A high-end example of a rare date and mintmark combination.
