Bust Half Dollars
1836 50C Lettered Edge, O-122, R.2, MS65 NGC. This is a lustrous, beautifully toned Gem example of Overton-122 -- one of the "Dot-Dash" varieties, with a small die dot outside of the 6 in the date at mid-loop. The upper serif of E in STATES is recut with a line-like extension to left. The bottom line of the base of the shield is doubled between vertical stripes 3 and 4. Both the Steve Herrman listing and the Parsley reference note a single MS65 example of O-122 in their Condition Census listings. This remarkably well-preserved and attractive half could be that coin, which has not been seen at auction in recent times. stunning cobalt-blue and aquamarine toning at the margins yields to gold and ivory shades at the centers. Swirling mint luster embellishes a sharp strike and reveals no marks of note. The Condition Census stands at 65,64,64,64,63 (8/17).
