Reeded Edge Half Dollars
1836 50C Reeded Edge, GR-1, R.2, AU53 PCGS. The Thonnelier steam press at the Philadelphia Mint was first used to strike large cents on March 23, 1836. Capable of producing coins at the then-astounding rate of 100 pieces per minute, the business of producing America's coinage changed in an instant from a labor-intensive endeavor to managed mass production. Reeded Edge half dollars (with a smaller diameter than their Lettered Edge precursors) comprised the second denomination struck on the new equipment. A lever supplied the striking pressure on the steam-powered equipment, rather than a screw mechanism. This example was sharply struck by the new method. Attractive golden-gray toning with blue accents provide nice eye appeal across the well-preserved surfaces. Population: 25 in 53, 86 finer (8/17).
