Early Dollars
1801 $1 B-3, BB-213, R.3, AU55 PCGS. CAC. Bowers Die State III, with light clash marks, minuscule rust marks, and trivial die cracks on each side. The Stack's Bowers cataloger called this an intermediate die state, failing to observe the faint reverse clash marks through STATES that are characteristic of the late die state. Four varieties of 1801 silver dollars were coined at the first Philadelphia Mint, and we believe that the current BB variety numbers, 211 through 214, represent the actual order of emission. We believe that there are just four or five Mint State examples and perhaps 12 to 15 AU examples known of the BB-213 die marriage. This piece is tied for the seventh best in Dave Bowers' list of Notable Specimens in the second edition of his reference. A trace of high-point wear is noted, with delicate champagne toning over the brilliant and highly lustrous surfaces.
Ex: Jarapendo Collection (Stack's-Bowers, 7/2011), lot 4043.
