Proof Trade Dollars
1880 T$1 PR65+ PCGS. A record mintage of 1,987 Trade dollar proofs were struck in 1880, but no circulation strikes -- an irresistible temptation for speculators, who hyped the low mintage. Most of the proofs still exist today, although few are as well-preserved as this high-end Gem. The mirrored fields display tan-gold toning with bits of blue and violet at the borders. There are no hairlines or other signs of cleaning that accompany lesser-grade examples. A sharply struck proof, with only minor incompleteness on a few of the top hair strands. Population: 4 in 65+, 35 finer (9/17).
